Abstract
Taking the European historical development as a frame of reference and the so-called transformation from feudal system to absolute monarchy as the main basis, Naitō Torajirō (内藤湖南) put forward the theory of “Tang-Song transition”. In recent years, a few scholars have also launched some new thoughts on the historical evolution between the Tang and Song Dynasties, and between the Song and Yuan Dynasties. However, their thinking method is actually consistent with Naitō’s, that is, from the point to the plane, with the fulcrum identified by each, the historical evolution is divided into stages. These seemingly clear theories of stages actually run the risk of simplifying complex history. Through in-depth observations, it can be found that, unlike those earth-shaking fundamental changes in social structure that are not common in history, the pace of historical evolution at different levels of social life between the Tang and Song Dynasties was different in terms of time and obviously out of sync with each other. Although there were still many aspects of evolution that occurred later, it was not until the middle of the Northern Song Dynasty that a “new situation” was generally presented. In a word, evolution and continuation are two basic perspectives that cannot be neglected in observing the history between the Tang and Song Dynasties. Only by improving our thinking methods can we truly “get out” of the theory of “Tang-Song transition”.
