When Su Shi (苏轼) was exiled in Huangzhou (黄州), he acted as a “secluded man” (“幽人”) in the spirit of The Book of Changes (《易经》), and started to write A Collection of Essays by Su Shi on The Book of Changes (《东坡易传》), which was revised and finished when he was in exile in Hainan(海南). In this book, Su Shi made a unique interpretation of the saying that “A secluded man who is upright is blessed” , endowed it with new connotations, and put forward his strategy and way for its realization. Just like the whole book, this interpretation was full of ideological significance and theoretical value, but what should be noted is that he practiced his ideological theory in “purifying his mind to forget about his worries” (“洗心”“忘忧”) , which became his “indistinct but not upset sentiment” (“隐约而不愠”) as a “secluded man” and its practice form of life. This is an indispensable perspective from Yiology (易学) to interpret Su Shi, especially his cultural disposition and literary creation in the periods of his stay in Huangzhou, Huizhou (惠州) and Danzhou (儋州).
