Abstract
A tradition of humanistic rationality which made“China become China”came into being at the turn of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. We may call it“the culture of the Zhou Dynasty”(周文), which was carried forward by Confucius and Confucianism in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and became the backbone of the social and political systems of traditional Chinese society in the Han Dynasty. But it often advanced and developed in difficulties, with distress in accompaniment. It has met with greater challenges during modern times. Whether the spirit and cultural coherence of this tradition can still last and grow within the modern university system after the collapse of its supporting social and political institutions, remains a problem that requires further exploration.
