Abstract

Peiwenyunfu(《佩文韵府》) mistakenly traces origin of the legend “touch a stone and turn it into gold” of Xu Xun(许逊)in Jin Dynasty to Liexianzhuan(《列仙传》), but actually it is first recorded in Chongjianxujingyangciji(《重建许旌阳祠记》)by Wang Anshi and borrowed in Liexianquanzhuan(《列仙全传》). Lexicographers of the past muddledLiexianzhuan(《列仙传》)and Liexianquanzhuan(《列仙全传》)and copied each other. In fact, the idiom“touch a stone and turn it into gold”(“点石成金”) originates from Nāgārjuna’s (龙树)paranormal power recorded in Datangxiyuji(《大唐西域记》)and widely spreads on the cultural basis of Taoist thoughts such as ‘The Art of Yellow and White’(“黄白之术”),‘Yin-Yang and Five Elements’(“阴阳五行”)and so on, which indicates the localization process of Buddhism in China and reflects the irrational nature of ancient mythology as well as the interpenetration principle of mythic thinking. Influenced by Buddhist culture, Huang Tingjian(黄庭坚) advanced the literary theory of “touch iron and turn it into gold” which means evolving new things from the old in composing poems and gives a long artistic vitality to “touch a stone and turn it into gold” in Buddhist story.
