Abstract

Time has been a topic of academic research for a long time. However, few people have discussed gender difference in the use of time from the perspective of the characteristics of time; and even fewer scholars have examined how females make use of time in such an event in life as childbearing. By using the existing documents and the nationwide data from the 2010 survey on Chinese females’ social status, this article discusses the difference between the concepts of time in traditional and modern senses, and the characteristics of females’ use of time in their daily life. This article especially analyzes the reality in which childbearing causes the alternate occurrence of the use of time in traditional and modern senses in females’ life. Our analysis indicates that when we examine the issue of the balance between life and work on the part of Chinese females, we must take into consideration the issues concerning the concept and value of time behind this balance. We should not ignore the reality in modern society, where time in traditional sense and time in modern sense coexist, and sometimes they try to seize each other.
