Abstract
The research on Yuefu poetry during the first half of the 20th century developed extensively in such universities and research institutes as Peking University, Tsinghua University, National Southwest Associated University, and others. As a scholar of Academicism, Huang Jie (黄节) first created the mode of research on Yuefu poetry. Meanwhile, the mode of research on Yuefu poetry of the Han, the Wei and the Six Dynasties was energetically promoted by the Folksongs Movement (歌谣运动) and the May Fourth New Culture Movement (新文学运动). After that, some scholars like Zheng Zhenduo (郑振铎), Lu Kanru (陆侃如) and Feng Yuanjun (冯沅君) interpreted Yuefu poetry with the concept of the civilian literature (平民文学) and the vernacular Chinese literature (白话文学). Some other scholars such as Liang Qichao (梁启超), Luo Genze (罗根泽), Xiao Difei (萧涤非) and Wang Yunxi (王运熙), strove to integrate the traditional research method with new aesthetic ideas. In reality, the above mentioned research methods were combined with each other. This article is intended to review the research by different scholars of that period on Yuefu poetry, and to construct an academic history on their research during the 20th century.
